Innov8tive Designs will be at the Arizona Electric Festival, January 29, 30 & 31.
Innov8tive Designs is one of the proud Vendor/Sponsors of the 2010 Arizona Electric Festival, which will be held at the Superstition Mountain flying field, just north of Apache Junction, Arizona, on January 29, 30 and 31. We have been a part of this great event since 2007, and this will be our 4th consecutive year in attendance. This all electric fly-in typically brings together over 250 pilots, and close to 1000 electric powered models together in one place for some of the best there is to offer in the hobby. We will be set up in the Vendor Area all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We will have the entire Scorpion product line on display, along with most of the other items that we offer, and everything will be available for purchase right there at the show. For more information about this event, and directions to the field, check out the Arizona Electric Festival Website on the web.

Scorpion Introduces the new S-2503-1610 F3P motor and S-5030-220 F3A motor
We are happy to announce that two new airplane motors are now available from Scorpion. The first is the much awaited S-2503-1610 Motor for F3P Indoor Pattern planes, like those flown in the ETOC championships. This motor was designed to run on 2 Li-Po cells with with a GWS 8x4DD or 8x4.3SF prop. With either of these props, you can expect to get around 12 ounces of thrust, with a current draw of only 7 amps. When teamed up with the lightweight Scorpion 11 Amp LV Speed Controller you have a potent power system for contest winning power in your F3P aircraft. With a retail price of only $34.99, this is a very affordable motor for your F3P aircraft.

Next is the new powerhouse motor for F3A Electric Pattern aircraft, the Scorpion S-5030-220 F3A. This motor was designed from the ground up to be as light as possible, while producing all the power needed for the demanding sequences of F3A competition. A lightened frame and titanium main shaft help to keep the weight down, since every gram counts when trying to stay within the 5000 gram weight limitation for this class of flying. The S-5030-220 F3A motor is designed to run on 10 Li-Po cells, with props in the 19 to 22 inch range. With a retail price of only $249.99, this motor is a great value for your F3A pattern aircraft.

The new "Big Dogs" on the block for electric powered helicopters are the HK-5020-450 and HK-5035-500 motors. These motors are the first in the new HK-50mm series for the larger helicopters. The HK-5020-450 motor is designed to run on 12 Li-Po cells in 700 class electric helicopters. The extra torque obtained from the 50mm stator makes this motor perfect for 700 class 3D machines, F3C competition helicopters, larger scale helicopters with heavy bodies and aerial camera platforms that need to be able to lift cameras or other payloads reliably. To handle the high torque that this motor puts out, it is equipped with a massive 10mm main shaft that is precision ground to 6mm at the output end to fit the standard 700 class pinion gears. This allows the use of oversize 10mm bearings to handle the high loads that these motors are subjected to. With a retail price of $199.99, this motors offers an affordable way to power your larger electric helicopters.

The next large-scale helicopter motor is the HK-5035-500. This motor is designed to power the new crop of larger 800mm blad helicopters that are now becoming available. This motor is also designed to operate on a 12-cell Li-Po battery pack, and features a 10mm main shaft supported by 10mm bearings. The output end of the shaft on this motor is precision ground to a diameter of 8mm to fit the larger pinions used in the 800 class helicopters. This motor is capable of running at a continuous current level of 120 amps for 5400 watts of power. It can handle peak input levels of 160 amps and produce 7100 watts of power for short bursts. That is a peak output level of over 9-1/2 horsepower! This motor will retail for $269.99, which makes it a very economical choice for your larger 800 class helicopter.

New S-4020-8 and HK-2221-2010 Motors are Here!
We are happy to announce that we just received the first shipment of 2 new motor sizes, the S-4020-8 and the HK-2221-2010. The new Scorpion S-4020-8 motor, started out as a custom wind for the people that wanted to put an electric motor in some of the older .60 to .75 size glow kits, but were limited to a 12 inch propeller size due to the landing gear length on the model. With a 6-cell Li-Po pack, the new S-4020-8 motor performs much like a .61 2-stroke motor, and turns props in the 11 to 12 inch range with authority. For people that wanted a bit more power out of a 4-cell set-up, the new S-4020-8 motor works great with props in the 14 to 15 inch range.

Many of you that fly Electric Helicopters have seen the new 6-cell set-ups that are being used in the 450 class (325mm blade) machines. These high-voltage, low-current power systems are bringing extremely efficient operation to the smaller size machines. Scorpion came out with the HK-2221-1630 motor a while back for those that wanted to have a motor for 6-cell use, and it has proven to be very popular. However, people wanted more power, so Scorpion went back to the drawing board and developed an entirely new motor for this size heli. The final result is the new Scorpion HK-2221-2010 motor that the most power ever available in a 450 size helicopter. This new motor will take your 6-cell machine to the limits and unleash the full potential of your helicopter!

Motor Bearing Lubrication Kit now available
To keep your brushless motor operating at maximum performance, it is important that the bearings in your motor be properly maintained. This is especially true of helicopter motors that often spin in excess of 45,000 RPM. In an average flight, the motor in a 450 size helicopter spins around almost a quarter million times! Without proper lubrication, the balls in the bearings can wear out quickly, leading to premature failure.

We have put together a motor bearing lubrication kit to help extend the life of the bearings in your Scorpion brushless motor. This kit contains a 25cc bottle of bearing lubricant and two needle point applicator nozzles. One nozzle is 1" long, and will work with the 22mm and 30mm motors, and the other nozzle is 1.5" long to use with 40mm and larger motors.

The oil included in the kit is a special product that actually bonds to the metal parts, and resists being thrown out by the high speed and centrifugal forces inside the bearings. A small drop placed on each bearing about once every 10 flights is enough to maintain proper lubrication to insure the longest possible life for your motor bearings. Click here to check out the Motor Bearing Lubrication Kit on our site.

Questions about Shipping costs:

We have gotten a few calls lately concerning the shipping costs calculated on our website. When we originally set up the site, the only items that were offered were Motors, Speed Controllers and Batteries. Since we ship with USPS Priority Mail, the site was set up to charge $5.00 shipping for the first item, and add $1.00 for each additional item. At the time it was set up, this system worked very well, but lately there have been some issues with the system. Over the past year, we have added a lot of small parts to the website, and this has created a situation where many times, a shipping charge gets calculated that is too high. If someone orders a dozen 6 inch props, they have $10.00 worth of product with a $16.00 shipping charge! The new site we are developing will address this issue, and make it easy to get exact shipping costs.

We are in the process of re-designing the entire webstore site, so in the mean time, what we are doing is making manual adjustments to the shipping costs before the order is actually billed to your credit card. If you pay for the order with PayPal, we will issue a shipping refund to get the shipping charge back down to the actual shipping cost. Our new site will use a weight based shipping calculator instead of an item based shipping calculator, so it will work no matter what you order. Sorry for the confusion, and rest assured that we are taking steps to correct this.

International Shipping Surcharge:

Over the past year, we have been shipping to International addresses at the same rate as domestic US addresses as a service to our customers overseas. Unfortunately, due to the recent increases in International Shipping rates, we can no longer afford to do this, as we are losing between $5.00 and $7.00 on every International order. The shipping rates for the US and Canada will remain the same, but for any other country there will $5.00 International Shipping Surcharge added to the cost of your order. There will be an International Shipping Surcharge added as a line item on the website, and this item will need to be orderd to process orders for customers that are anywhere other than the USA or Canada. You will be directed to add this item during the check-out process if you forget to do so. Thank you for your cooperation with this new shipping process!

New Policy concerning Warranty Coverage on Scorpion motors

All Scorpion motors come with a 2-Year warranty that covers defects in materials or workmanship, and this has not changed. The warranty change concerns the motor bearings, and is effective June 30, 2008. The Scorpion Company has no control over how the motors will be used in a model, and this is especially true for the helicopter motors. Due to the high spped at which these motors operate, if the gear lash is set too tight in a helicopter, the side loads on the bearings can cause failure in a little as 5-10 flights. Also, due to the high speeds at which these motors operate, often in excess of 40,000 RPM, the oil in the bearings can be thrown out after 10-12 flights. Because of these facts, we are recommending that the users of the Heli motors inspect the motor before each flight t make sure that there is no wobble in the output shaft. This will catch any problems with the bearings before the bearings actually fail. Scorpion also recommends that the bearings be oiled every 5-6 flights with a good silicone based motor oil, or a lubricating product such as Corrosion-X. This will ensure the longest possible life fir the bearings and the motor. If the bearings do wear to the point where the output shaft wobbles at all, the motor should be taken out of service and the bearings should be replaced. The bearings themselves will no longer be covered under the 2-year warranty, and any subsequent damage caused to the motor by the failure of a bearing will also not be covered. It is the responsibility of the end user to make sure that the bearings are in good condition prior to each flight, and to cease flying immediatly if the motor begins emitting any abnormal sounds that may be a sign of the bearings starting to fail.

Scorpion Motor Comparison Chart Now On-Line
With all of the brushless motors that are currrently available, it can be a confusing maze of numbers trying to figure out how one motor from a manufacturer compares to another motor from a different manufacturer. We get emails every day asking, "What Scorpion Motor is equivilent to a 28-940 from Manufacturer X, or the kit calls for a 3245-18 from Company Z, what Scorpion motor would you recommend to replace it." To answer these kinds of questions, we have put together a very comprehensive list of 12 popular brand brushless motors, and matched them up with each other and the appropriate Scorpion Motor that is closest in performance. This chart can be viewed on-line at our Scorpion Motor Matching Chart. For a formatted 2-page PDF version of the Motor Comparison chart that is ready to print, please download the Scorpion Motor Chart Zip File.

Scorpion Calc V3.31 Software Available for Download
After several months of use by modelers all over the world, the Scorpion Calc software has become very popular for testing out battery and prop combinations on Scorpion Motors. This newest version has added prop data for all of the currently available Scorpion motors including the new S-4035, S5525, S-5535 and S-5545 series motors, for those people that want to use these motors in aircraft applications, or that just want to check out the current draw and RMP numbers under various loads. This program has the parameters for all of the Scorpion motors pre-loaded into it, making prop selection a snap. With Scorpion Calc, you can experiment with different props and input voltages to see what kind of performance you can expect. The program currently has a database of 270 propellers ranging from a GWS 3x2 up to a Mejzlik 32x10, so there is a wide range to choose from. For any given prop and voltage, Scorpion Calc will give you the RPM, Pitch Speed, Current Draw, Watts, Motor Efficiency and Estimated Motor Temperature. The fields for Rm, Io, Kv and motor weight are user selectable, so if you have another motor you want to simulate, just plug in the values and Scorpion Calc will do the rest.

Scorpion Calc is the work of Louis Fourdan, a French RC modeler and programmer, that worked with Scorpion to develop this great piece of software. The best part is that it is available for FREE by going to the Scorpion Calc Thread on RC Groups to find the latest version that is available. Here is a screen shot of the Scorpion Calc program in use. In this simulation, a Scorpion 4025-12 motor is being tested with an APC 16x10E prop, running at 21 volts to simulate a 6-cell Li-Po battery under load. In this screen shot, you can see that Scorpion Calc predicts that the motor will turn at 7,710 RPM with a pitch speed of 73 MPH. The prop will produce 198.9 ounces of thrust and absorb 210.1 ounce-inches of torque. Further down you can see that the estimated operating temperature of the motor at this load is 102.4 degrees F, and that the motor is operating at an efficiency of 84.7%. With this prop, the motor will draw 69.859 amps of current, which gives an input power to the motor of 1467 watts, and based on the 84.7% efficiency of the motor, this would yield 1198 watts at the prop. Every time you change a prop, or adjust the input voltage, Scorpion Calc will re-calculate all of the values for the new inputs. This makes selecting the right prop for your Scorpion motor as easy as bolting it on!
